The Art of Ash-glazing

Plant-ash glaze is one of the earliest known ceramic glazes, originating in ancient China as early as the Shang and Zhou dynasties. It was first discovered through the natural interaction of wood ash and clay under high temperatures, forming a soft, luminous surface that would later become the foundation of celadon and the broader Chinese glazing tradition.

Unlike industrial glazes, plant-ash glaze is inherently tied to nature. Its composition varies depending on the source of the ash—different plants, soils, and regions produce subtle yet distinctive tones, textures, and flows. This unpredictability is not a flaw, but the essence of the material: each firing is a collaboration between earth, fire, and time.

At Ashborn, we work with plant materials collected from across China—bamboo, blossoms, agricultural byproducts, and more—transforming them into glazes that carry the character of their origin. Every piece is therefore not only handcrafted, but also materially unique, shaped by both place and process.
